Pupils and teachers all over the world join forces to measure the shadows of a 1m long stick! You don’t need much to participate, just some sun and a stick!

Everybody's measurements are compiled into an online database. These measurements can be used in geography lessons about the movements of the earth in our solar system, in trigonometry classes and even in classes discussing how time used to be measured long ago. Of course it is also a fun educational activity for people of any age!

Participate

You can find all the information (project description, objectives and instructions) on the educational section of the website of Maciste Ice.

Watch the instruction video made by Koen Meirlaen, geography teacher, at the Princess Elisabeth station in Antarctica. It is in Dutch, but don’t worry! We've provided a translation.

Student can use a worksheet to fill in their data. Download student worksheet.

Project Partners

The Sun Shadows Project is a joint educational project of the Museo Nazionale dell'Antartide and the International Polar Foundation. Both send a teacher to Antarctica to make the research the scientists are doing accessible to the students so they can have a greater appreciation of polar science.

This project and the material produced have been made using and adapting the resources of the following early projects.
