Science teachers caught the polar virus
Six months after their return from the Oslo conference, Belgian science teachers motivate their students towards science through the Princess Elisabeth Station project.
On the 1st of October, the Gemeentelijk Technisch Instituut de Londerzeel organised a two days event about sustainable development and polar regions.
Experts in mechanics, sustainable development and polar sciences were solicited to share their experience with students. Sandra Vanhove was invited by one of the three teachers who participated in the Oslo Conference, Wim Van Buggenghout. She gave a presentation about her experience in Antarctica.
The Dutch teachers are not the only ones to have caught the polar virus: on the 26th of October, the Athénée Royal of Pépinster launched its new "polar sciences" section. In this framework, the school built a replica of the Princess Elisabeth Station at the entrance of the sciences floor.
During the evening, a conference-debate was organized on the importance of polar sciences for education in the french Community. Four invitees gave a talk to cover various aspects of the theme: Bruno Delille, climatologist; Jean-Jacques Derwael, member of several expeditions in Antarctica during the '60; Georges Vanloubbeeck, general inspector for education in the french Community and Emmanuelle Driesschaert, IPF education officer.
