New Educational Material Available!
After having reached the North Pole on April 24th, Alain Hubert and Dixie Dansercoer are now heading for Greenland. This long walk on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean allows for teachers to discuss with their students issues concerning the water, ice and oceans. New educational material is now available on this website.
Water and ice, oceans and the ice drift
The hydrosphere, comprising of water under its "liquid" form (seas, oceans, rivers, groundwater, etc.) and the cryosphere, found as ice (glaciers, sea ice, ice caps, permafrost, etc.) are two very important elements regulating the Earth's climate.
- Which natural phenomena lie beneath the oceans' dynamic?
- Is there a lot of fresh water on Earth?
- Where does the rain come from?
- Why do icebergs float?
- Can you extract salt from the sea?
- How does the sea ice move about?
Three educational documents allow teachers to introduce these subjects to their students:
- A teaching dossier: "Water and Ice on Earth" is available for download;
- An teaching dossier: "Oceans" is now available as well;
- A 4-page fact sheet: "The ice drift" will help you better understand this phenomenon. Alain and Dixie left an ARGOS beacon on the ice, thanks to satellites you can follow its movements and the drifting of the ice supporting it on a map.
The multimedia animations available on this website will also help you illustrate these topics.
Interactive question
The interactive question regarding polar science is now closed. Many thanks to all those who participated. A teacher trainer gives you his point of view.
A new interactive question regarding water and ice is online. Give us your opinion and that of your students.
