Meeting of the Steering Committee for the ClimaTIC project

The Steering Committee of the ClimaTIC project met in Lille, France on the 12 and 13 May 2006. Three activities are to be continued for 2006 : The Comic book, the pollen analysis and the meterological station. The project partners presented the different activities proposed to students and organised the activities for 2006 and 2007.

Some partners, like the Centre Scolaire Sainte-Véronique et Marie-José (Belgium) or the Galatasaray College (Turkia) have studied peat bogs under the supervision of scientists and made interesting pollen analysis (30 different species). These studies will help building a simulation of the pollen repartition and a reconstitution of what the plants and landscapes were a long time ago.

All partners have used teaching tools developped by the IPF in collaboration with the university of Geneva and Inforef. The comic book "the migration of the Ibanes", flash animations and teaching dossiers were particularly appreciated.

The comic book is now translated in Polish, Rumanian and Turkish and will be available in these countries. The interactive comic book will soon be available in Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania and Turkey.

The French "Centre National de Formation de l'Enseignement Technique Privé" is testing an automatic weather station. Following this testing phase, all partners of the project will be equipped and data exchange will take place.

You will find the programme for 2006-2007 hereunder:

  • September-October 2006: Start activities with students (comic book, installation of automatic weather stations, studies and samples in peat bogs).
  • November-December 2006: Follow up of the Polarstern 2006 Antarctic Expedition. Aboard of this ship, Gauthier Chapelle of the IPF will send news and answer questions as outreach officer.
  • January-March 2007: Local enquiry regarding wood provenance. Students will be invited to list all uses of wood and to discover where it comes from. A second step will make comparaisons between the data in the various countries.
  • March-May 2007: An expedition to Congo will present the consequences of use and exploitation of tropical wood to students.

Through these activities, students will gain better understanding of environmental changes and of their consequences for populations.

All schools are invited to participate in some or all aspects of this project.
