Calypso-cores are large-diameter (15 cm) steel pipes with an extra plastic liner in which the sediment is caught. Here, a core is taken out of the water, after the 8 tonne weight has been removed. The white colour on the core barrel already indicates a successful penetration of the seafloor (muddy sediment usually sticks to the outside of the core).
